The publisher Hearst has been a part of the Shine competition since the very beginning, some thirteen years ago, so it was fantastic to welcome Katie Vanneck-Smith, CEO of Hearst UK, to speak to our nominees on awards day this year.

Hearst are long-time sponsors and supporters of the competition and Katie’s speech was one of three truly memorable speeches from Shine 2023.

Young mind: Shine winner Alex Mortimer inspires a new generation

At the Shine Awards 2021, the recipient of the Terry Mansfield MBE Award for Tomorrow’s Talent was Alex Mortimer from Ibstock Place School, who won for her magazine ‘Young Minds’ which focussed on mental health.

This year, we invited Alex to return and address the ceremony and give out this year’s award.

Sir Nicholas Coleridge’s speech at the Shine Awards 2022

At this year’s Shine Awards, it was thrilling for the audience to hear from Sir Nicholas Coleridge, former Editorial Director and President of the Conde Nast media empire.

Sir Nicholas told the attendees about his amazing career and how he believes it should be a government requirement for every school to have its own magazine – which is where he began his interest in media as a teenager.

This week we held our first in-person Shine Awards since the summer of 2019. It was unusual – not merely away from an under-renovation Stationers’ Hall but also a special winners lunch where everyone knew they’d won. But we did it and the joy in the beautiful room at the Guildhall where we met, at being together and celebrating young talent, was palpable.
