Centering your students: writing from their experiences

Sometimes the best way of finding common ground with others is by telling them how we feel. A school magazine, podcast or newspaper can be a forum in the Roman sense: a print or digital ‘town square’ where students are truly heard. It’s a unique opportunity to bring their stories to life.

I recall a winning entry from two years ago by student writer Hilary Hanslin whose piece, “Don’t touch my hair” caused a sensation with the Shine School Media Award judges, winning Best writer for a non-fiction piece.

We’ve seen a recent trend in entries which focus on documenting the everyday life of a school. Topics such as exam stress or peer pressure have begun to become more pertinent now the drama of the pandemic has faded leaving day to day experiences front and centre.

Putting your team together

It’s such a busy time of year settling into the new term… but now’s the perfect moment to start building a project with a target of entering the Shine School Media Awards next spring.

A school magazine or newspaper will bring new classmates together and foster teamwork – as well as generating a wealth of projects across the timetable. It’s a great potential mix: writers, artists, designers, podcasters and the leaders who the team will gravitate towards.

Here comes Shine 2024…

Welcome back to the Autumn Term!

It feels like we’re all in a new class this September, me included. Today I am taking my first meeting as Chair of the Shine School Media Awards and I have those first-day-back butterflies. Hopefully many of you will know me from my involvement over the last few years and I’m really looking forward to talking to (and encouraging!) teachers and students this year.
