‘Ask the Expert’ is back: journalist Minreet Kaur shares advice for students
Hello everyone,
This week, I’ve some exciting news: we’re back with a new series of ‘Ask the Expert’ – conversations with outstanding professionals working in media.
Here at Shine, we’ve crafted a series of five questions carefully designed to offer perspectives and advice to students. We’re asking each of our guests these same questions in each of our interviews which will be coming over the next few weeks.
In our first new episode, I spoke to award-winning freelance journalist Minreet Kaur. Minreeet has worked in the newsrooms of the BBC and Sky and is also the daughter of the famous ‘Skipping Sikh’, inspiring her father to start skipping during the pandemic.
In our interview, Minreet makes a real point of discussing unseen, unheard stories in communities, that she suggests students should consider writing about.
She explains;
“Media is very different to what it was before. People are consuming content in different ways. There’s so much out there. It’s what takes each person’s interest.
“It’s just really good to know what’s going on in your local community and see what isn’t being discussed and take that forward. That would be the next topical story, the things we don’t hear from.”
So… why not set this as a project – for students to tell stories, perhaps quoting as a source someone within their own family, or finding out more about a local interest story, which could be a local event happening on their street. It might be the start of something amazing…
